Mark Sandler, Chair of the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism (ALCCA), was featured on The Canadian Jewish News’ North Star podcast to analyze the federal government’s newly proposed Combatting Hate Act.

Sandler welcomed aspects of the legislation, which seeks to criminalize intimidation outside Jewish institutions and ban the display of Nazi and terrorist symbols, but emphasized that stronger measures and consistent enforcement are still urgently needed.

He was joined by Ezra Shanken, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, who had met with the Prime Minister in Ottawa just days before the announcement. Together, they highlighted both the promise of the reforms and the gaps that remain, including the absence of provisions addressing the glorification or wilful promotion of terrorism.

Sandler’s insights reflect ALCCA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring Canadian legal frameworks meaningfully protect Jewish communities and combat rising antisemitism.
