ALCCA Chair Mark Sandler appeared before the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights to deliver opening remarks on Bill C-9 and Canada’s response to hate-motivated crime and extremism.

Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act, has passed Parliament, marking an important step forward in strengthening Canada's response to hate. ALCCA played a leading role in advocating for key amendments to the legislation and will continue working to ensure robust enforcement of the new law while advancing additional measures, including a new offence of wilful promotion of terrorism.

Following the adoption of Bill C-9, Combatting Hate Act, into law, seven community organizations—the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism, B’nai Brith Canada, Canadian Women Against Antisemitism, the Canadian Jewish Law Association, the Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, and the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center—issued this joint statement.

Today, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism, B’nai Brith Canada, Canadian Women Against Antisemitism, Canadian Jewish Law Association, and Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center welcomed the adoption of Bill C-9 by the House of Commons and urged Parliamentarians to advance more measures to confront Canada’s antisemitism crisis.
