A newly released report from Statistics Canada describes the third sharp increase in hate crimes in four years.

In 2023, antisemitic hate crimes represented 70% of the religion-based hate crimes, totalling 900 crimes, itself a 69% increase over the previous year. 72% of all hate crimes went unsolved. Many offenders had prior or subsequent interactions with police, raising additional questions about the effectiveness of both law enforcement and deterrence for those apprehended.

What’s driving this alarming trend – and how can our institutions do better? The Canadian Jewish News (CJN) Daily explores these questions, featuring insights from Statistics Canada and ALCCA’s Chair, Mark Sandler, who highlights the legal and systemic reforms needed to ensure greater protection for Jewish Canadians.
